Controlling Alien Admission – Border Control/Admission – National Customer Service Center

The National Customer Service Center, accessible at (800) 375-5283, provides automated and live information to customers who want to learn about immigration services and benefits. The line may also be accessed in Spanish, and a TTY number is available, as well. Outside the United States, customers can call (785) 330-1048 to check the status of their cases. Only automated help is provided at this number.

The Center is available around the clock. However, live assistance is, generally speaking, only available between 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. local time, Monday through Friday. There are slight variations in Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The hours of operation of live assistance, however, are significantly different in Guam, where availability is between 6:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. local time on Tuesday through Saturday.

A variety of general information and assistance is available through the Center, such as case status information if filing was either electronic or at a service center; local immigration offices procedures, locations, and hours; and eligibility and filing requirements. Additionally, forms may be ordered using the automated system. Changes of address can often be reported using the toll-free number, as well, particularly if an application or petition is pending at a service center. Finally, requests for rescheduling of appointments may be made using the toll-free number, although whether these requests will be granted is within the discretion of the local immigration office.

The automated options allow callers to get information about pending applications and petitions, to access information about fingerprinting and medical examinations, to gain information about filing fees, to order forms, and to learn about several immigration-related topics. For instance, citizen and permanent resident callers can obtain information about how to bring relatives and fianc¤to the U.S. The automated system also contains information about how to replace permanent resident green cards and about how permanent residents can gain citizenship through naturalization.
